This beautiful tree is Ontario’s hardiest native nut tree, and a fine walnut species to plant if you have the space. The nut meat is a delicacy rarely enjoyed, however, because it takes some work to extract it from the shell. It’s worth it, though! A hammer goes a long way. These are seedlings from a very healthy local tree, so we’re hoping they’re resistant to the butternut canker.
