The grand ambassador of the foraging realm has done it again. Incredible Wild Edibles follows in the footsteps of Thayer’s previous two books with a collection of essays and detailed profiles of some of the best wild edibles to be found in Wisconsin and beyond. He’s chosen some of the most productive and delicious plants to profile, and details exactly how to identify them and at which stage of growth. Thayer expanded my conception of what foraging could be. I’d always seen it as a fun hobby but virtually inconsequential in terms of environmental stewardship. Now I see it as an essential way to feed myself, as well as a way of cultivating the deepest relationship with Nature wherein it nourishes me in the most fundamental way. Samuel Thayer should be on every environmentalist’s reading list.
