Caragana arborescens: 8’ high x 6’ wide / full sun / zone 2
This is an excellent candidate for cut-and-drop mulch production. The Siberian pea shrub fixes nitrogen and coppices easily, and therefore produces fertile biomass. The young pods can be eaten in salads and the older ones peeled for the seeds (though this is finicky). The seeds can be eaten raw or dried for later use, processed like beans. Apparently chickens enjoy the pods, too.
