Product Description

Apios americana: 7-8’ high x 1’ wide / full sun to part shade / zone 3

The First Nations of North America have been cultivating the ground nut for centuries.  The annual vines need something to climb each spring, while the perennial tubers are dug any time of year for use as a starchy, nutty root vegetable.  Ground nuts are also nitrogen-fixers, and will slowly spread to form a colony if they have the space.  They’re currently being bred for commercial production by Louisiana State University.
